Be fraud smart
Beware of selling items on online marketplaces.
We are investigating reports of fraudsters ‘buying’ electronic items such as mobile phones or laptops.
They are arranging to buy your item and on collection will show you a banking app transferring the money to your account. In some cases, they even call their so called ‘bank’ to get them to confirm the transfer.
This is a fake banking app or phone number, and the payment will never make it to your account.
When selling items online check the buyer’s review history and feedback from others.
Be careful of accounts that may have been set up very recently with lots of favourable feedback that sounds the same.
For more information on how you, your family, your friends, neighbours and colleagues can take steps to prevent becoming a victim of fraud, please visit the fraud advice pages on our website.

Former PD Diesel still fuelled by catching criminals
Diesel is one of many police dogs who have worked tirelessly alongside our handlers to help keep their communities safe.
As a German Shepherd, he solved his way through rigorous puppy training and passed-out to be a general-purpose police dog. He’s helped track suspects, assisted in searches for missing people and found key evidence including weapons.
Former PD Diesel was based at the Essex Police Dog Unit in Sandon but has since retired from active duties after protecting and serving Essex for five years.
He has quickly adapted to life inside following his final shift earlier this year and has stayed with his handler to be the perfect side-kick at home.
We thank him for his service and hope he enjoys his new life on the quiet side.
This week we remember
Joseph Farmer
After leaving school Joseph Farmer joined the army, serving with the Coldstream Guards. On discharge from The Guards he worked as a labourer before joining Essex Constabulary as Police Constable 256 on December 7, 1905.
At the outbreak of war in August 1914, Farmer, a reservist, was recalled to his regiment as Private. After a long day of intense fighting in France, along with hundreds of others, Joseph was sent to a prisoner of war camp at Doeberitz before being moved again to the Eastern Front where he died on April 15 1917.
Leonard Douglas Bannister
Leonard Bannister joined Essex County Constabulary on 6th June 1939, having previously served in the Coldstream Guards from 31st August 1932 to 1st June 1939.
After training at Headquarters, he was posted to Maldon from 5th August 1939. However, on 1st December 1939, like many of his colleagues, he was recalled to his former regiment. On 11th February 1940 he married Emily Cissie Bannister, of Romford. Within a matter of weeks he was fatally injured in a motor accident and died on Monday 15th April 1940. By that stage he had transferred to become Lance Corporal 2655673 with the Corps of Military Police. He was aged 25.
Adam John Eves
Acting Sergeant Adam Eves, a native of Hutton, near Brentwood, joined the Essex County Constabulary at the age of 20 years, and in March 1877 was appointed Constable No. 63. He served at various stations throughout the county before being promoted to the rank of Acting Sergeant and posted to Purleigh in January 1891. He was brutally murdered on 16 April 1893 whilst carrying out his duties.

How do you justify sending five officers to impound a personal collection of golliwogs from an Essex pub? Were you expecting violence from these toys? Or perhaps a desperate defence of them from the Publican?
Please don't waste your time and test our patience by utilising a five strong force for such a petty, imagined 'crime'.
As a former officer I am ashamed to read that SIX (yes SIX) police officers went into a pub on an anonymous complaint about traditional toys causing racial offence! I'm surprised they weren't armed - they weren't armed were they?? Whoever authorised that should be cautioned for wasting police time when there are not enough officers to properly investigate serious crime or traffic offences. No wonder the public have lost faith in the police service!
