This week we will remember Gordon Warner, Stapleton Hollett, Robert Bambrough, Harry Mann and Philip Saban.
Ten years after the formation of Essex County Constabulary in 1840, Police constable Robert Bambrough was tasked with escorting 20 year-old William Wood from Billericay Magistrates Court to Brentwood. Wood had been sentenced to three months imprisonment for poaching.
The two men set out for the seven mile walk with the two secured together with handcuffs and handgrip linked by a length of chain. When they reached Hutton, Wood started a fight and they both fell into a stagnant pond. Wood stamped on Robert's face and thrust mud into his mouth soon rendering him unconscious and submerged. Wood escaped towards the church but returned briefly to lift Robert's head and shoulders clear of the water.
The whole scene was witnessed by eleven year-old Sarah Hatch from a window at Hutton House who screamed and raised the alarm. Nearby workmen pulled Robert from the pond and took him to the Chequers Pub where a doctor was called. Wood was recognised from the description published in the morning's newspaper and was captured and taken to Robert Bambrough's bedside as was the practice at that time. Wood stated that he had never intended harm. Robert died the following day on Friday 30 November 1850.
Wood was charged with attempted murder and at court in Chelmsford the following March, his assertation he hadn't intended to harm PC Bambrough was accepted. Wood was convicted of manslaughter and transported for life.
