Last month, Essex Police received 3,448 calls or reports from members of the public relating to incidents requiring police action in the Colchester district – an average of 115 a day. Just over half were 999 calls, with many requiring an emergency response. Pictured is District Commander for Colchester - Chief Inspector Rob Huddleston.
Essex Police affirms commitment to Armed Forces Covenant
As part of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, for which we have held a Silver Award since 2014, we have signed a standalone Armed Forces Covenant, which pledges our commitment to supporting former, and serving, services personnel, should they wish to work for Essex Police.
However, we aim to attain Gold award status in 2022, which is an accolade held by just nine other UK police forces.

Winter drink and drug drive campaign
E-scooters: don't drink and drive — www.essex.police.uk
An e-scooter is not an alternative to a taxi after a night out: don’t get caught out, know the law before you hop on one this Christmas.
If you are thinking of buying an e-scooter as a gift this Christmas, please be aware it’s perfectly legal to buy an e-scooter, but there are limits where you can ride it.
A privately-owned e-scooter can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission, it’s illegal to ride them on roads, footpaths, in fact any public area. Retailers selling e-scooters have been asked to point out these restrictions at point of sale.
Only e-scooters that form part of any of the Essex trials are permissible on the road in the trial areas only.
Anyone who uses a rental e-scooter must adhere to the Highway Code and road traffic laws, including drink or drug driving laws.
Fraud advice - COVID passport scams
With the Government rollout of the Covid-19 booster and the introduction of Covid passports, criminals are seeking to exploit the pandemic further.
Fake text messages and calls
Scammers have been targeting residents with fake text messages.
These messages ask residents to click a link in order to apply for a Covid passport , before proceeding to take personal details and payment requests.
The Covid-19 booster and passport are free and you will never be asked for payment.
People have also received phone calls to book non-existent ‘vaccine appointments’. They are asked to confirm their booking by pressing a number on their phone which results in them being billed by their provider.

This week we will remember
This week we will remember George Manning who served with Essex County Constabulary from 23 August 1946 and died on 26 December, 1976.
On one of the last days of 30 years' service, George Manning was out on mobile patrol with a young officer when their vehicle was sent to a suspected burglary in progress at Hutton. The police vehicle was involved in a road accident en route, and George Manning and the constable were badly injured. George tried to release the trapped driver but collapsed in the process. Six weeks later, on Boxing Day 1976, he died from his injuries.
"The Police Hero With A Silver Tongue"
This is how the Romford Express headlined George Manning's quite remarkable career which included twice talking gunmen into laying down their arms, earning him the Queen's Commendation for Bravery. Read more on the Essex Police Memorial Trust website.
